Labor Union Leader Arrested on Extortion Charges

In Gazipur, a case has been filed against five individuals, including Islam Uddin, a member of the BNP Upazila Convener Committee, for extortion, assault, and physical violence at an auto-rickshaw stand on the Safari Park road. Police have arrested Shahidullah, the General Secretary of Bhawalgar Union Labor Union, in connection with the incident.

According to the case statement, the accused have been forcibly collecting extortion money from auto-rickshaw drivers for a long time. Those who refused to pay were subjected to threats, verbal abuse, and physical attacks. On July 11, around 4:00 PM, when some drivers resisted the extortion, three individuals—Delwar Hossain (45), Rafid Mia (16), and Rakib Sarker (23)—were beaten with local weapons. Rafid was seriously injured. After assaulting Delwar Hossain, the accused snatched cash from him and forcibly confined him in Islam Uddin’s rice warehouse. Upon receiving the news, police conducted a raid, rescued Delwar, and admitted the injured to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital. The other accused in the case are Miyar Uddin (43), Shahidullah (41), and Sumon Mia (25). Joydebpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhid Ahmed said a case has been filed regarding the extortion and assault at the auto-rickshaw stand. Based on this, Shahidullah has been arrested, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the other accused.
